"Tremendo Lente de Nikon lo recomiendo 100%!!!!! es Excelente!!" 2010-02-24
By Carlos Bustamante V (Venezuela)

"Great lens at a great price." 2010-02-24
By Jared M. Leblanc (Little Elm, TX United States)
This is a great lens to add to your collection. I own the D40 which comes with the 18-55mm lens, and found that it was insufficient to capture all of the photos that I needed to take. What I have quickly figured out (and liked) about this lens is that the VR function does more than just steady a highly zoomed shot. I figured out that I can use this function in dimly lit situations, like night shooting or indoor shooting with out a flash and the VR will virtually eliminate any motion blur that you would normally experience from a longer shutter speed. Plus, you can't beat this price! Phenomenal lens for the price.

 "Pretty Good Lens" 2010-02-24
By Nicholas Erwin (Waterbury, VT)
I have the 18-55mm VR lens for my D60 and wanted more focal length and took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do and after viewing photos and listening and reading other comments, asking questions about this lens and so I decided to buy this lens and I am very happy with it. It's been really nice taking photos with it, though it's not great for indoors, maybe be good with a external flash or something.

It's cold here and I haven't really bother going outside to take photos, but I do when spring and summer comes along and then is where I will fully test this lens, so far it's been producing some nice images.

I think if you got the 18-55, totally get this 55-200 VR. It's worth every penny!

"Unsung bargain of consumer lenses" 2010-02-22
By NewEnglandScene (New Hampshire)
This little lens is the sleeper of Nikon consumer lenes. It is capable of producing some excellent photos on Nikon's consumer and and prosumer bodies. The lens is worth 50-75% more than its bargain price of $150. It is sharp and super lightweight. Perfect walk-around telezoom for my D90.

I own the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII, which I regard as the reference standard in size lens. And if that lens is a 10 (and by the way, the new VRII 'is really a 10'!), then this lens, which costs 1/10 the price, is a 7.5. Not bad!

Okay, so wouldn't use this lens on D700 or D3 (they are FX anyway), but for the D90 and models below, this is your lens. I have tried the 70-200 f/2.8 VR (the older version) on my D90, and the limitation is the camera. That is too much lens for the D90, and you don't take full advantage of the lens, more so for the new VRII lens.

For the D300, you probably want the 70-300mm VR or the the 70-200 f/2.8 VR or the VRII if you want to pay the extra money.

Yes, this is a plastic lens. But the construction is reasonable for its pricepoint. Don't let the plastic fool you. This lens is fast focusing and accurate. It comes with a 5 year warranty if it goes out of alignment. And for $150, what do you care if it breaks?

As far as I am concerned this lens is a no-brainer addition to the 18-105 kit lens that comes with the D90. The only other choice for that camera is the 70-300mm VR, which will yield slightly better pictures and give some additional range ...but comparing $150 for this lens to $540 for that lens, unless you really think you need the extra length, this is the lens for you.

I chose to give this 5-stars, because for the price and in its class, this is a really super lens. Compared to the Nikkor reference standard telezoom, okay, it is 4-stars. But that isn't a fair comparison.

Exactly what I needed for a low price. Arrived in a matter of just a few days. As long as you check your manual or the manufacturer's website, you can figure out the exact cable you need. I have a Nikon S210 and checked the website, it had all the specifics which made it easy to find which cable I needed.

"Wrong size for my camera..." 2009-11-23
By M. DiStefano (Bloomfield Hills, MI)
The cable arrived promptly, but it was too large for my camera. I have the Nikon Coolpix L18 camera. According to the description of this cable, it should fit that exact camera, but it did not. Since the cable came from another source (not Amazon directly), I called them and the person I spoke with couldn't have been nicer. She looked up the information and realized I needed the "mini" cable. OK, fine. But they need to change the description on the cable I received - it does NOT fit the L18, as stated.

They sent me the replacement promptly, along with a postage paid label to return the other cable. Easy and quick.

"Understand what you are buying and why and you will be happy!" 2010-02-08
By Rick V (IN)
Background you can skip

I realize a lot has been written everywhere about this lens. Just look at KenRockwell or DPReview and the sheer detailed reviews from fellow photographers around the internet. One thing is special about photo-ists: they are hardly fan-boys: if something is a-miss with a product then that get splattered out in gory detail, often with photo evidence... Why am I saying this? Because I think you can therefore trust the overall rating of this lens on the web. This one is often referred to as the model 1902, as well, by the way.

I wanted to add my 2 cents since I have bought several lenses in the last year that are all very similar. This review focuses on the 1.8 and 1.4 50mm lenses. The other 2 lenses are reviewed on their individual product pages. I thought some others might be trying to choose between these 2 lenses, but having a hard time determining the relatively steep price difference between the 1.4 and 1.8. I will not go into the technical differences between the 2 either as others that are more adept than me have done that and I am predominantly a person that focuses on the results and not the specs.

The primes I own:

85mm 1.8

35mm 1.8

50mm 1.8 ( http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEN4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265596625&sr=8-2 )

50mm 1.4 (this one)

About this lens

I bought this lens especially for portraiture. I am a hobbyist but my camera is glued to me (a D90) and I tend to shoot lots of shots indoors, capturing casual moments of my kids, pets and so on. Probably very similar to any other proud dad and hubby.

Initially I did not want to shell out for the 50mm 1.4 and decided to get the well respected 50mm 1.8. I loved the 1.8 from the start. It was great indoors and even at the 1.8 f-stop it was sharp (with the softness that one can expect). The color rendering is beautiful and I love what it does to skin tones combined with the softness wide open. Since the 1.8 became my most beloved portrait lens I decided that it would be worth looking at upgrading to the 1.4. So I took the leap.

Of course the extra light is great but do the photos come out magically better? No, not for the pro-mateur like myself. The AF is a little faster it seems and perhaps, but I am not sure, the colors come out a little more vibrant. Softness wise at wide open I think they are equally soft but the 1.4 gets tack sharp at f2 whereas the 1.8 needs to get closer to f4. I happen to shoot mostly in the f2 to f4 range so this is acceptable for both.

The bokeh (the out of focus texture of the background that can make the subject look like it was placed in front of a wonderful milky pastel) is impressive on both lenses. I cannot say that there is a visibly distinguishable edge for either.

Ofcourse the depth of field with the 1.4 is more pronouced than with the 1.8 at wide open.

My simple conclusion

I am not trying to compare a 100 dollar lens to a 300 dollar lens because the 300 dollar one is the better lens when you read all the reviews and I *think* I agree. However, when you are looking for value for money, the 1.8 wins hands down. You get so close to the 1.4 results and if you're a photoholic amateur like myself you will be deliriously happy with the 1.8. Once you have exhausted its capabilities (which will take most of us 20 years of learning) or you become enamored with sports photography (or your kids play ice hockey and you do not want to flash) then the 1.4 becomes more realistic.

I recommend that if you are on a budget then you start with the 1.8. Once you are ready to upgrade you simply sell it, you will always get 80% of value back if well treated, and substitute with the much more expensive 1.4.

Al the serious pros would simply jump straight to the 1.4 but that is not the audience this review is meant for. Hope this helps.

A humble non-technical amateur photographer

 "THE Normal Lens" 2010-01-30
By M. Kelley (Hot Spring, AR. USA)
I have always wanted to get the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens for my camera but normal for the Nikon DX cameras was the 35mm f/ 2.0 which I have. The 50mm is the equivalent of 75mm with the DX's smaller sensor. Now with the Nikon D700 The 50mm is back to producing a normal size image because the sensor in the camera is the same as 35mm film in size. So I got one.

The lens is excellent. It allows shooting in available light and with this camera, at ISOs faster than otherwise possible. The lens is sharp as a tack and it allows for selective focus, producing a narrow depth of field at its maximum f stop. It is a breeze to operate. You have to remember to keep your focusing hand clear of the focusing ring as it spins in auto focus mode.

This lens configuration is one of Nikons oldest and simplest and is one of the sharpest lenses they make. I would recommend this lens to anyone wanting a prime lens that is tack sharp and very fast.

Mike

By Cyirra (North Dakota)
I have had this camera for about a year and have taken more than 3000 shots with it. The only thing that I have trouble with is when useing for close up work it does not always want to focus, but if you zoom out then back in you can usually get it to focus on what you want. The file sizes are large enough that you can crop and still keep it at a large enough size to get nice sized prints (4x6, 5x9, never tried getting 8x10's). Awesome for those that enjoy taking photos, may not satisfy those that are looking to sell. I have never been disappointed with image quality. I bought a Canon Rebel XSI (SLR) to replace it but when I used it I was VERY disappointed in what I got and went back to my Nikon.

I'm definitely a novice. There's a lot I need to learn in order to be able to take better photos, but this camera is easy to use. I can take pretty good pictures with it...just pointing and shooting. I haven't learned a lot about the settings yet, but I'm sure that when I do, my photos will be even better! So far, I have captured some really great photos of my kids and of the mountain scenery here where I live! The camera is fun to use, and I figure I will just keep experimenting with it to see what works for me! I cannot believe Nikon has discontinued this camera! The Nikon Coolpix P80 is easily portable. I carry it in a large padded camera bag that will hold other accessories and other "non-camera" things that I need to carry with me. It could easily be carried in a much smaller bag with all the things that you need just for the camera...extra batteries, extra memory cards, etc. It's very light weight and easy to use. It's the kind of camera that makes a novice want to learn more about taking really good photos!

 "The best camera ever!" 2009-08-29
By Sarah (USA)
This camera is the best camera that I have ever had. Yes, there probably are better cameras, but I have never experienced them and this camera works just the way I need it to. This lightweight camera has amazing features and takes the best pictures. My favorite feature on the camera is the rapid action shot. On the dial wheel, you can find it by locating the picture of a runner running. That feature is really good when you need to take pictures of children running and playing around or, my favorite, when you take fireworks. I have gotten some really good shots of fireworks at just the right moment. Shots that would not have been possible if I have not had this shot. All in all, I definitely recommend that you get this camera for all of your photography needs. This lightweight, attractive, reasonably cheap camera is the perfect camera for you!

VR Electronic Image Stabilization takes camera movement data from a built-in angular velocity sensor and applies in-camera image processing to turn blurred images into beautifully clear results, on the spot or anytime later.Extended light sensitivity range of ISO 50 to ISO 2000 and the new image-processing engine's ability to preserve high image quality at high ISO settings provide new opportunities to shoot more effectively in lower lighting conditions. That's plenty of sharp resolution to capture the finest details, crop creatively and produce beautiful enlargements. Optimizing performance and color reproduction is an advanced new image processing engine. And the quality optics of a 28-102mm Zoom-Nikkor lens (35mm equivalent) maximizes compositional freedom.

 "nikon coolpix p50" 2010-02-06
By James Cubberley (YAKIMA, WASHINGTON, US)
Someone trashed this camera in a previous review, very early after it appeared. The truth is, the P50

is a excellent camera, that is capable of taking really great pics. Closeups are crisp, scenics are

spetacular, due in part from the 28mm wide angle lens! It has a VIEWFINDER in addition to the lcd panel

on the back. I had a p50, and lost it about a year ago. I was lucky to find another one here in Amazon...

I bought it from SWIMMOUSE. Great guy to deal with. Brand new in the box. I'm a happy guy again, snapping

pics almost every day. I have two other 10meg digitals and they don't hold a candle to the Nikon P50.

 "Not Nikon's best work" 2010-02-03
By S. McLaughlin (Titusville,FL)
Being an avid Nikon user (D300) wanting a decent image producing camera, the P50 does not deliver. Nice features and manual settings +/- exp., time lapse, etc. I miss the quality images from my previous Canon point-n-shoot.

 "I'm satisfied" 2009-07-04
By R. Williams (Indianapolis, IN)
I like this camera and I'd recommend it. While at times it doesn't like to completely close the lens and/or shut down when I power it off, it's still a good purchase in my opinion.

This is easily my forth or fifth digital camera over the years, so I know what I like and don't like- as well as need and don't need. My needs are pretty minimal and I'm pretty sure 8.1 MP was overkill for me. I don't do anything fancy and really only desire a camera that's easy to operate (ie I don't need to resort to the instructions or manual) and takes decent family photos. However I did research this camera prior to buying and it seems some people thought it even good for more advanced levels of photography- of course, not professional.

I will say it seems a lot less durable (the actually camera casing??? not sure if that's the correct term but I'm going with it- the black part) than I expected- especially for a Nikon. Oh, I will it requires rechargable AA or digital camera AA- so plan on either buy a least two rechargable sets (to have one and one for back up) or lots of AAs bc it's pretty typically to most cameras on battery life.

But minus few random things I mentioned, I'd say it's a pretty good camera and very user friendly (my mother even figured it out within a few attempts and she just recently figured out call waiting on her cell phone! So that says a lot!).

 "A Little Sleeper" 2009-06-30
By Robert E. Keay
Purchased N/P50 in early June 09 , took it to Niagara Falls , Ont . , and shot close to 400 pictures ! In rain , and mist conditions , with careful usage , I have some of the best Digital Pictures I have ever taken ! D Lighting saved me in numerous situations , and my shots of N/Falls from the " Maid of the Mist " are just beautiful ! I used Lithium Batteries and for Three Days I was captured by this Little Wonder of a Camera ! Prior experience helped me , of course , but this Digital Camera made the whole Trip completely worthwhile , and enjoyable ! High praise to Nikon ! R E Keay

"Not good for pix of kids or pets" 2009-05-15
By Lizzie T. (Los Angeles)
The shutter lag on this camera is really, really slow, so if you are buying and hoping to get pix of kids and pets - you know, things that move around a lot - then you are in for a world of frustration. If you are doing landscapes, posed shots or stuff like that, I'm sure it's a fine camera. Also, after the shutter finally goes off and you get that blurry picture, you have to wait for the picture to actually load into the memory, so you will miss some photo op's then as well.

I did try to contact the manufacturer to see if I could do something to speed up the shutter speed, but Nikon customer help for camera usage doesn't seem to exist.
